Warm Fire, Cold Comfort
NYC Midnight 500-Word Fiction Challenge
Round Two

2023

I was overjoyed when I found out I was one of the 1,000 writers selected to advance to round two of this competition. Once again, I had 48 hours to write a story with a new assigned genre, action, and object. The idea of writing historical fiction was daunting, especially with so few words to spare on rich details, but I think it turned out pretty well, and the judges agreed!

My submission — Warm Fire, Cold Comfort — placed third in group 23, which moved me into the final round.

The Dark Beyond: NYC Midnight 500-Word Fiction Challenge, Round One

2023

NYC Midnight hosts a variety of writing contests throughout the year, but 2023 was their inaugural 500-word fiction competition. Each of the 4,283 participants was placed into a group with an assigned genre, action, and object. Writers had 48 hours after receiving their assignments to submit their story.

My submission, The Dark Beyond, placed fifth in group 92, which moved me into round two of the competition.

I Kissed Your Boyfriend:
Another Feminist Vlog

January – April 2021

Four years after her original off-Broadway production, Laura Kay decided to adapt her autobiographical solo show for a virtual performance setting.

The short-form web series follows Laura as she revisits romantic milestones, the turbulence of app dating, and the complications of trauma and navigating mental health.

Please note: Contains strong language and sexual themes/content.

I Kissed Your Boyfriend:
Another Feminist Rant

2016-2017

The one-woman show that started it all premiered at the United Solo Theatre Festival in 2016 and was followed up by a second stage iteration at The PIT Underground in 2017. It was a labor of love, to be sure, with rehearsals in Laura's bedroom, lots of crafting, and some very packed ride-shares to transport set pieces.

I stage managed the original productions, which were written by and starring Laura Kay, directed by Chelsea Bryn Lockie, and featured original music by Jeff Gorcyca.

Nights on the Couch
at the Strawberry One-Act Festival

July 2016

Nights on the Couch is a one-act play by Mizzou alum Matt Fotis. The show follows one boy's journey from adolescence to adulthood through five nights spent on, you guessed it, a couch.

(A heavy couch that had to be struck after every performance, not that I was counting.)

This show was a blast to stage manage and felt like a mini MU Theatre Department reunion.

Three Translations of Uncle Vanya at the Same Time | April 2015

Three Translations of Uncle Vanya at the Same Time was, well, exactly what it sounds like. The folks at New Saloon took three translations of the classic text and created a hybrid script to showcase their similarities and differences. I came on to stage manage the project late in the game, so it was a real "hit the ground running" experience.

Old Paper Houses | February - March 2015

Old Paper Houses by Piehole Productions was the most experimental show I ever stage managed. It moved back in time from the 1970s through the 1800s and into a unique version of utopia. There was fake snow, stickers, the tiniest paper props, and a brief cameo by yours truly as I carted the sun behind me.

Winner: #GWStoriesEverywhere Contest | July 2017

Gotham Writers Workshop hosts a monthly contest for the best one-tweet short story on a given theme. The theme for my winning tweet was "first kiss."
